DaVinci Hypocracy

I assume yinz guys to be smart enough to find the first three min of the PRI program “studio 360’

The host of the program laid this out; the desire to have solid answers drives both conspiracy theory (DaVinci) and fundamentalism (religious or otherwise).

Good starting point, but I think he may have it inverted, let us multiply this equation by negative 1= The desire to fill in the blanks is the result of intellectual and spiritual impatience, the inability to contemplate, as the Nuns called it, “a Mystery”. It is the theological/philosophical equivalent of the Queen lyric “I want it all, and I want it now!”

We think it to be so brutish in the context of the materialistic or emotional desires of Freddie Mercury, but when it comes to unsolved crimes or open questions of cosmic truth it becomes our entitlement.

The conservative CEO, seeking certain answers at his local Assembly O’ God is a theological welfare queen, cue Ronald Reagan to project the image of the undeserved Cadillac.

The world is full of those who want no mysteries, to them I say tough shit!
There are always elements of nature and God and even human activity that you can not understand that you do not deserve to understand, get used to it!

Where did I learn such an un-Christian attitude toward the junkies of certainty?
Catholic school. It was a place full of adults teaching a system by which you could try to get the answers, but if you asked the right question you would be told that there wasn’t one,”it’s a mystery, my child”. A dangerous, almost anarchistic power placed in the hands of youth; adults who did not pretend to have all the answers, in a world addicted to pretension.

Which is why I get such a chuckle from the ayatollahs of American Corporate Christianity as they denounce the blasphemous celluloid exploits of Tom Hanks.
As they stand on their “rock of ages” shore of certainty, do they realize that the orthodoxy they defend was created by that strange popeish unmarried non-literalist Catholic cardinal floating by on his surfboard? Dobson, Robertson, Fallwell and the other defenders of “Simple McGod” do not go after DaVinci (and thereby the Gnostic gospels) for making Jesus too cosmic, too distant, too mysterious, They are worried that Jesus is portrayed as having a normal sex life and having some babies with Mary Magdalene, I mean who are the defenders of the un-married priesthood here? Now to be fair to the Ayatollahs of Oklahoma City, Virginia Beach and Lynchburg, it was Hollywood that gave the story the strong romantic angle, but there is still plenty for this old catholic boy to scratch his head about, very strange, very incongruous bedfellows here.
Those who made plenty of sermons, not to mention millions of dollars screaming against the conspiratorial secracy of the Catholic church, now defend against Hollywood and fiction criticiseing same, in the same manner. Its a mystery!
There is one valid parallel however between these modern ‘Know nothings” and Opus Dei Catholics; they both put the right in Right wing. They know what they are talking about ‘cause God told them so and any naysayers are liberals or communists or worse. My junior Senator is one of these Opus Dei guys and once described the type of Catholic I am as those who would ..”Sit around the campfire and sing Kumbaya” I would simply say to (p)Rick Santorum;” yeah we sing songs from Africa and elsewhere because perhaps someone else’s conceptualization of God could help us get closer to the truth and we sit around the campfire, fuel it with bricks of Afghani hash and breath real deep trying to figure out why you’re still in office.

Pleni sunt coeli et terra.
