The Post Gazette did not even note it, But more than WAMO ceased to exist as of last friday.
Clinging by her finger nails to the crashing radiozeppelin, was Lynn Cullen.
Lynn had talked her way back on the air with Wamo managment, battled a poor time slot, a signal not as strong and further north than that of 1360 but still had an audience building and advertising on the up swing when a 3.8 million dollar purchase by religious broadcasters short circuited the comeback.

Lynn deserves credit for her tenacity in landing the WAMO gig and for the great years of radio she brought to Pittsburgh. It was nice to have a talk show with some class and culture (imagine a Marty Griffin interview with Sam Hazo). Problem is, that there aren't many options left, station wise for Lynn, or anyone proposing talk radio of any serious intellectual caliber. Commercial radio needs to be scrapped and turned into micro and regional broadcasting with the required condition of "serving the public interest as a public trustee"until then, good luck with a parade of tent preachers, Chiropractors,snake oil salesmen and right wing gassbags.

A force has turned broadcasting in to the "vast wasteland" predicted, that force is un-bridled, deregulated capitalism.

I'm a 28-year-old woman. I've been with my current boyfriend for five years. He's married and has been telling me the whole time that he's going to leave his wife eventually. There's always an excuse: a crisis with the kids, money problems, etc. I've been stupid to stay with him for so long, but I just can't keep away from him.

I just found out I'm pregnant, and I haven't told my boyfriend. This is the second time we've been pregnant. Last time he reacted very badly, and I miscarried after a few weeks. I know he'll want me to get rid of the baby, but I'm going to keep it.

Whenever his wife goes away, I go over to the house to spend time with him. I've been planting evidence of our affair around the house in the hopes his wife will find it. So far, no luck. Kucinich, by contrast, is going to bat for "atheists in foxholes" who, by popular slogan, do not exist. So Kucinich, by forming an organization to combat the fundamentalist christian takeover of the U.S. military will have EVERYONE, save the ghost of madeline murry o'hare, pissed as hell at him. For information of how lonely this must be, I refer you to a poem by the welsh poet Halden Caufield; "the ballad of the breadman" where he uses the words "no man was THAT mans freind" to describe the isolation of Jesus, just before he got capital punishment.

In the same light, a freind sent an e-mail forward of merriments, one of which was read by Jay Lenno (solidarity to the writters strike!) in which Jay said essentually; "with all these floods and wild fires are you sure we should be taking God out of the pleadge of alligience?".

Listening to KXOT, they ran “as it happens” pretty much the Canadian equivalent of “All things considered”. Interview was with the Canadian photographer who shot the infamous photo of a dead US soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu Somalia. He spoke of the Personal responsibility he felt for the pictures effects on US policy; the flight from Somalia and the blind eye turned to Rwanda. He had nightmare filled, mental illness provoking RESPONSIBILITY for what he had done and its EFFECT ON OTHERS. Could we, perhaps inoculate some folks in Washington, with this absent strain of simple humanity.

The other snip is explanation of why we don’t have to give a shit and why God is kicking our ass for it.

Listening to KUHF Houston TexaCUTION, one of the sponcers of NPR programming was a local company specializing in offshore drilling and national defense.

Was there not an American president, viewed both as warrior and humanitarian, who warned of the dangerous power of the “military industrial complex”.

Allowing private industry to get powerful enough to hijack our foreign policy. Allowing an image, no matter how poignant to cause us to turn our backs on the humanitarian interventions necessary in Africa. Both, in my Sunday morning morallism, sins.

The Vanity Fair article concerning the BS which the republicans crafted against Al Gore, and how the "liberal media" reported these as "gospel truth" had my antenna up for this trick.

So when this Letter, Written by the then 23 year old Bill Clinton dropped in my lap (thank G-d Gore invented the internets) I just had to check it out.

Before being bespoiled by the truth, what is your (media shaped) memory of this?

I was still doing the talk show at Jeanette, reading the NY Times, wall street journal, Trib and Post every day, I would listen to NPR while delivering pizza and would sample as much Limbaugh as I could stand.

My memory is of a proud and elitist Clinton, proclaiming the military to be a task "beneath him" and stating that HE, PERSONNALLY "LOATHED THE MILITARY"

I never remember ANYONE, not NYT, not NPR, putting this statement in to the context of the letter.

The most charitable treatment I remember hearing, is of an "older wiser Clinton" disowning his "youthful indiscretion"

Being as complaint is the mainstay of this screed, I relish the occaisional opportunity to speak of the pleasant surprises of life.
Had to fix a problem with the computer, so I called up the 800 # at the "major" computer company, a technically proficient young lady patiently listened to my long winded report of symptoms, reccomemded reloading a driver, which fixed it. To top it off, the phone center was in that sweltering, low tax, right-to-work state called Ontario!
A local political windbag (Jim Roddy) was recently saying that Pittsburgh must follow the lead of right-to-work states to attract jobs, resulting in me screeming at the TV "you mean a right-to-work state like Ontario? like Toyota just did?

When the health care costs more than the steel in a car, "socialized medicine" is looking like a good deal to industry.

The excellent blog “Simply left behind” has apparently caught some flack for making (what I thought was) a grand slam point about the shallowness of the media.

It seems the Dianne sawyers of the world have been wagging about some young lady who was a contestant on American idol, having some photos of a “pornographic nature” about. I guess the 5^th estate has nothing better to watchdog these days than the morals of a person who can’t sing well, are we expecting Miss America here?

Good starting point, but I think he may have it inverted, let us multiply this equation by negative 1= The desire to fill in the blanks is the result of intellectual and spiritual impatience, the inability to contemplate, as the Nuns called it, “a Mystery”. It is the theological/philosophical equivalent of the Queen lyric “I want it all, and I want it now!”

Now to be fair to the Ayatollahs of Oklahoma City, Virginia Beach and Lynchburg, it was Hollywood that gave the story the strong romantic angle, but there is still plenty for this old catholic boy to scratch his head about, very strange, very incongruous bedfellows here.
Those who made plenty of sermons, not to mention millions of dollars screaming against the conspiratorial secracy of the Catholic church, now defend against Hollywood and fiction criticiseing same, in the same manner.Its a mystery!
There is one valid parallel however between these modern ‘Know nothings” and Opus Dei Catholics; they both put the right in Right wing. They know what they are talking about ‘cause God told them so and any naysayers are liberals or communists or worse. My junior Senator is one of these Opus Dei guys and once described the type of Catholic I am as those who would ..”Sit around the campfire and sing Kumbaya” I would simply say to (p)Rick Santorum;” yeah we sing songs from Africa and elsewhere because perhaps someone else’s conceptualization of God could help us get closer to the truth and we sit around the campfire, fuel it with bricks of Afghani hash and breath real deep trying to figure out why you’re still in office.

With that now dispenced with(prophylaxis for the brave new world) it is introduction time. I am Clair Thomas, i spent 23 years as the news,talk, and music propagandist at radio station WBCW in Jeanette Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh),recent experience has re-enforced what i knew then, it was better than working for a living. Not that i didnt get tired and pissed off, just as with any other job, it is just that radio is too much fun to be included with regular work. Radio, to my taste, is not as fun as it used to be, music is corporatised tasteless crap, talk radio is no longer a parade of freindly but competitious viewpoints, it has become the argumentitive equivalent of flashing, lifting apart the rain coat, imploring the world to look at what you got.
Things could be better, things could be more thoughtful. The deck is stacked against us, it will be tough to demonstrate the commercial viability of talk radio that lifts up the workers and small buisness people of america, that stands for honesty, quality, knowledge and equality of opportunity. It is imperative that we join the fray, our country has been taken over by selfish, shallow, vaccuous forces. Let them blather of how God is on their side, let us see to it that we are on Gods side.
